Minted by the Australian Perth Mint, the Australian Lunar Series is based on the Chinese Lunar Calendar, each coin representing a different year in the twelve year lunar cycle. These legal tender coins, first minted in 1996, contain .9999 fine 24-karat gold. The obverse displays an image of Queen Elizabeth II and the reverse an animal sign depicting the Chinese lunar year the coin was minted.
